Chipping Away
Miss Lynn is quite a marble palace of pride, but her Master Craftsman seems intent on pulling down the splendid pillars and reducing her to a humble but useful abode. An early imprint of His chisel was when she was in high school and boasted to her friends that she had no wisdom teeth to worry about--no surgeries, no headaches, no crooked teeth. That afternoon the x-rays came back from the dentist, and she spent her next spring break with a swollen face and four holes in her mouth.
More recently, last summer she waxed her aging but good-looking vehicle and took every opportunity to mention how well the car was enduring its age. Days later, the car was backed into, causing a cosmetic but unmistakable marring of its pristineness. A later insurance claim more than provided for any financial mortifications, but yet another chip was missing from the base of the center marble column.
Today a rather large supporting beam was dismantled when she spotted police lights flashing directly behind her. She had just boasted weeks before of her pristine seven-year record of never being pulled over by law-enforcement personnel. Seven years, I suppose, is long enough for such an empty display of self-satisfaction and pharasaic righteousness.
She was dismissed with a warning--though she was guilty, the offense was minimal and the car she was driving was registered to someone with the same last name as her own. She is very thankful, both that the consequences should be so small and that she is no longer blind to yet another of her follies.
"'But let him who boasts boast about this: that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,' declares the Lord."

Amen and Halleluia, HE is still working with us. This person's "ivory palace" has been the focus of the same chipping for at least 50 years and the thing is still standing--smaller and less imposing but not quite something of much use.
it happens...hehehe
